Het is niet uitzonderlijk dat er een lange pauze is tussen twee werkstukken van Gillian Welch en Dave Rawlings. Tussen The Harrow & The Harvest en de uit 2003 daterende voorganger Soul Journey gaapt een leemte van acht jaar, het was nog wat langer wachten op de opvolger. Welch is niet snel tevreden en schuwt geenszins zelfkritiek over haar songwerk. Evenals de studioalbums vormen het vanaf 2016 uitgebrachte The Official Revival Bootleg en een handvol episodes van The Boots serie telkens een openbaring. Na het afronden van studies in  fotografie trok Welch ze naar de Berklee College Of Music in Boston , ze ontmoette er Dave Rawlings die haar volgde naar...
