Onder normale omstandigheden komen de hersenen in de nachturen tot stilstand, bij slapeloosheid is dat niet het geval. Dit rusteloos ongemak triggert de ontluikende creativiteit. Een zoektocht naar bereikbare middelen om hieruit een bevredigend gevoel van bezinning te halen volgt, hopend om uiteindelijk de kalmte in het leven te hervinden. Zach Condon lijdt al op zeer jeugdige leeftijd aan deze kwaal en benut zijn verspilde tijd met vakkundig een breed scala aan schikkende muziekinstrumenten te ontdekken. Zo raakt hij al snel in het bespelen van drummachine, synthesizer, akoestische gitaar en trompet bekwaam. Vooral die trompet speelt een grote rol in het onderscheidende Beirut geluid.
